Maciej Masztalski of the Polish Theater group Ad Spectators could face up to five years in jail for organizing illegal public broadcasts of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shinning."
Ad Spectators are most well known for performing plays. However, since Semptember of last year they also orgnaized weekly film showings in their theater. The group focused on showing thoughtful movies, mostly Hitchcock and Giuseppe. Recently, they were to show Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shinning.' However, the police were called in and put an end to the event. The theater's director was arrested. "The man had organized an illegal public showing of unlicensed movies," said Krzysztof Zaporowski from the Wrocław Police. Masztalski contends that he had a contract signed with Polish publishing agency ZAIKS granting permission to show the films in public. He also notes that his audience consisted of only five people, and that tickets cost 5 zloties (a little over one dollar). "Even if the showing was in some basement in the middle of no where in Poland we'd find out anyways and we'd prosecute," says Tomasz Sianowski, a lawye for Warner Bros.
