Warlikowski Garners Praise in Moscow

Krzysztof Warlikowski has been made the first recipient of the Meyerhold award for directorial excellence in world theater. Warlikowski's "Krum" has been well recieved by the Russian press. "The play is ideal in scenography. Every element has meaning, everything is symbolic," wrote Olga Rogińska in the Russki Żurnal. Warlikowski put "Krum" on in Moscow twice during the Meyherhold Days Weekend, organized by the Meyerhold Creative Center, initiating a cycle of performances by the most famous theater directors in the World.

Warlikowski was their first guest, and the first to be awarded. Although only a limited number of Russians had a chance to see Warlikowski's play, some Russian papers published an interview with the director as well as a review of the "difficult play" based on the text of Israeli dramatist Henoch Lewin. "In the beginning, it is necessary to note what might frighten audiences in Krum: it's three hours with nothing attractive on stage; nothing really happens. Two boring weddings, two deaths of characters of little import. This is all we will see. The play itself warns us: be patient with me. It's quite like how we all must be patient with our long and monotone life, during which nothing attractive happpens," writes Gleb Sitkowski in the Gazietta newspaper. Sitkowski notes that Warlikowski's "Krum" is, essentially, a few hours of truth centered on the title hero, the 38 year old Jewish man returning to his family home after many years.
