Five seperate theatrical groups have insisted that the recently controversial 'Suka Off' group be allowed to present its' plays during the upcoming Łódź Theatrical Festival on December 9th. The artistic director of the festival, Marcin Glinkowski, declared that he wants Suka Off to be permited to perform. "The situation requires a discussion about the limits of artistic freedom and the festival will host just such a debate." The problem, however, is that the theatrical group will not have anywhere to perform. The Academic Institute of Artistic Initiative, where Suka Off was to perform, has denied the group permission.
Suka Off, which is a theatrical group from Katowice, has been accussed by the authorities in Warsaw of propagating pornography and subsequently is now being ostracized by the theatrical festival in Łódź. Tomasz Bieszczad, the director of the Academic Institute of Artistic Initiatives, has refused to allow Suka Off to perform on the territory of the institute. "We cannot put the public at risk of experiencing unconventional experiences," argues Mr. Tomasz Bieszczad. Suka Off was invited to the festival, and initially there were no reservations regarding the group. However, last week, the Polish Tabloid 'Fakt' published an article accusing the group of propagating pornography, and the mayor of the district of Praga in Warsaw sued the theatrical group, charging them with pornography. The charges were aimed at a performance that the theatrical group held in one of Warsaw's newest Clubs, M25.
