Cultivating Good Television

Poles treat cultural television programs like spinach: they appreciate the richness of the thing, but avoid actually consuming it. Will 'The Culture Channel,' which debuts on April 24th manage to make culture edible for the general public?

One in three Poles declares that at the sight of a television show dedicated to culture, they change the channel. Three fourths of viewers aren't able to name a single cultural show that they enjoy watching. The remainder point to "I love movies" (21%), "Television Theater" (13%), "Pegaza" (21%) and "Best Books" (6%). Other shows ranked below 5% in popularity. The first three shows appear to find favor with viewers largely due to their settled nature - they've been running for many years. In the case of "Pegaza," brand recognition seems to be the source of viewer's respect for the show, given that it is no longer even broadcast. "I love movies" could well attract attention for its' overview of films, but one can clearly see cost cutting measures have taken effect as the show has slid into reviewing marginal films recently. "Television Theater" is another show that has a long history of name recognition and is thus easily one of the first programs that viewers will name when asked about
