Piotr Cieplak has lately been reminding us of Adam Słodowy. We watched his plays with eyes wide open, while all thinking the same thing: how did he come up with that?
Following the use of grand theatrics in his Children's Tales, the time has now come for a more humble form; albeit no less thoughtful. "A Sentimental Play for Four Actors," prepared with the Montownia Theater at the Praga Theater fits into a small construction made of bamboo, cardboard and rope. There are simple symbols drawn up on paper, road signs, clouds, animals, trees, rain drops - all of it is somewhat reminiscent of the dreams of a crazy graphics artists, as if from Michel Gondra's "In Dreams." Amongst all of the interesting things on stage; the most interesting are the actors. Without words, but merely using gestures, props and mime, accompanied by two musicians who are capable of playing just about any sound, they tell the story of four men standing in one house. Mr. Pillow (Adam Krawczuk) doesn't ever come out of the house, grows cacturses and always makes a ritual of drinking a cup of tea each day.
